Categories
Creating, customising, colour-coding and deleting categories, and the statistics behind each one.
2 min read
Every item belongs to one category. Categories drive the library's filters, the dashboard's breakdown and the accounting views, so a little thought here pays off for a long time.
Default categories
A new account starts with a set of default categories, translated into your language. You can rename them, recolour them and change their icons — customising a default does not affect anybody else's account, and it does not count against your plan's limit on custom categories.
Creating a category
- 1Open Categories in the sidebar.
- 2Press Create new.
- 3Give it a name. Keep it short — it appears on every card and filter.
- 4Add a description if the boundary is not obvious. What goes in here and what does not is the useful thing to write.
- 5Pick an icon. There is a search box; type what the category is about rather than scrolling.
- 6Pick a colour. Colour is how you recognise a category at a glance in the library and on the charts.
- 7Press Create category.
Category statistics
Press Show stats on a category to expand its numbers:
- Total items
- How many items it holds.
- Total value
- Their combined value.
- Average value per item
- Total divided by count — useful for spotting a category with one outlier in it.
- Most valuable
- The single highest-value item.
- Condition distribution
- How the items are spread across the condition grades. A category that is mostly Fair and Poor is a maintenance backlog.
- Recent items
- The latest additions, with a link into the library filtered to this category.
Editing and deleting
Edit category changes any of its properties. Deleting is only possible when the category is empty — ELVOAQ refuses to delete a category that still has items in it, because that would leave those records unclassified without asking. Move or delete the items first.
Important
Free accounts can create 5 custom categories, Starter 15, Collector 50; Pro and above are unlimited. Defaults do not count.
Tip
Fewer, broader categories beat many narrow ones. If a category will only ever hold two items, it is probably a tag — see Tags.
