Price display and VAT
Choosing whether prices appear net or gross, and how VAT is calculated on an item.
2 min read
Two separate things control how money appears in ELVOAQ: what you entered on the item, and how you have asked the app to display it.
On the item
Each item carries a VAT rate and a switch, Price includes VAT. Together with the purchase price they let ELVOAQ derive the other two figures:
- Net
- The price before VAT.
- VAT amount
- The tax itself.
- Gross
- What was actually paid — net plus VAT.
Tick Price includes VAT when the number you typed is the gross figure from the receipt; ELVOAQ then works backwards to the net. Leave it clear when the price is net, and it adds the VAT on top.
Across the app
Settings → Price display decides which of those figures you see by default in the library, the dashboard, reports and totals.
- With VAT (gross)
- Show what things actually cost. The usual choice for private owners and collectors.
- Without VAT (net)
- Show the figure that matters for a VAT-registered business, where the VAT is reclaimed.
Note
Changing this setting does not change a single stored number. It changes which of the three derived figures is displayed. The item detail view always shows all three regardless.
Currency and formatting
Settings → Formatting holds the rest of the regional preferences:
- Default currency
- The currency new items start with, and the one totals are converted into.
- Decimal separator
- Point or comma.
- Thousands separator
- Space, point, comma or nothing.
- Date format
- How dates are written.
- Time format
- 12-hour or 24-hour.
- Week starts on
- Which day begins the week in the calendar.
Tip
Always record an item in the currency you actually paid in, and let ELVOAQ convert. Converting by hand at entry time bakes in one exchange rate for ever, and the original figure is then lost.
