Quick start: catalogue your first item
The five-minute path from an empty vault to a properly documented item.
1 min read
Pick something near you — the laptop on the desk is fine. The point is to walk the whole path once so the rest of the platform makes sense.
- 1Open Library in the sidebar and press Add item.
- 2Type a name. Be specific: MacBook Pro 14" 2024, space black beats laptop. The name is what you will search for later.
- 3Add a photo. Drag one in, or press the upload area to choose a file. On a phone, the camera opens directly. The first photo becomes the cover image.
- 4Pick a category. Categories are how the library is filtered and how the dashboard groups your value.
- 5Enter the purchase price and pick the currency. This is the number all of the financial views build on.
- 6Set the purchase date. It drives warranty reminders, depreciation and age-based insights.
- 7Press Create item.
That is a complete record. Open it and you will see the detail view, where everything else attaches.
Then make it useful
- 1Attach the receipt as a file. Without a receipt, an insurance claim is an argument; with one, it is paperwork.
- 2Add a tag or two — insured, office, warranty-2027. Tags cut across categories.
- 3Set the location so you know which room, shelf or site it is in.
- 4Add a note with anything that does not fit a field: the serial number's whereabouts, who serviced it, what the strange scratch is.
Tip
Do not try to catalogue everything you own in one sitting. Twenty good records beat two hundred empty ones. Start with the things that would hurt most to lose.
